Description: Poggibonsi: Carlo Cambi, 2015. 28cm., hardcover, 302pp. illus. Itlaian-English text. Summary: Jirí Kolár gives to art a structure equivalent to that of the signs of writing and as such he dissects and recomposes it; the static image becomes movement, doubt; it admits of new, unconventional readings to recreate the complexity of the multiple realities we all experience; he introduces the temporal dimension, the flow of life as overlapping layers (chiasmage), wear and tear (frottage) or folds and creases (froissage). In other works, the artist elicits memories of objects and life experiences, fragments of a dispersed identity which become a kaleidoscope of sometimes-obsessive signs in the minutely meticulous, labyrinthine chiasmages made of fragments of books in different languages and characters. Deprived of their capacity to recount, the signs take on new meanings in the rhythm and musicality of their arrangements as coverings of surfaces or objects. Kolár’s complex connections among fragments of words and images, music, movement, offer a personal synthesis of his culture and civilisation as he renews a tired language and images whose meanings were lost (becoming tools of a regime) through “poetry” (poiesis-creation), redeeming them and giving them new life.
