Item Number: 135749 Title: EDOUARD VUILLARD : Einblicke in die Lithowerkstatt Author: Strobl, Andreas Price: Not Available ISBN: 9783422073234 Description: München: Deutscher Kunstverlag, 2015. 24cm., pbk., 128pp., 83 color illus. Exhibition held at Staatlichen Graphischen Sammlung, München. German text. Summary: Colour lithography experienced its first major blossoming in Paris at the end of the 19th century. Names such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901), Pierre Bonnard (1867–1947), and Edouard Vuillard (1868–1940) have become synonymous with new approaches to colour in printmaking and unusual compositions. Vuillard’s distinctive compositional eye for both interiors and urban landscapes made its first major debut in 1899 with the portfolio ‘Paysages et intérieurs’. At the same time, he proved himself to be an outstanding colourist capable of masterfully implementing new ideas in colour printing. The exhibition features the sequence of twelve lithographs and a unique array of trial proofs and first-state prints from this key work. Since the proofs are privately owned, they are seldom on public display and thus offer a rare glimpse into the creative process behind colour lithography.
