Summary: Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de’ Medici (1463–1503), along with his brother Giovanni, belong to the younger line of the Medici and were among the most influential rulers and statesman of Florence. In times of political and economical power struggles, Lorenzo, who had been educated by wellknown humanists, gave commissions and became a patron of the most important artists of his era, including Botticelli, Signorelli and Michelangelo. This publication reconstructs the rich interior design of the city palace and the country villas in the Medici brothers’ possession. World-famous works of art, including Botticelli’s Primavera, are placed into their original spatial and programmatic contexts for the first time, and are discussed as an expression of Florence’s claim to dominance.
