Exhibition held at Renaissancesaal der Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek, Weimar. German text. Summary: The exhibition Dante, ein offenes Buch (Dante, An Open Book) is dedicated to the Italian author Dante Alighieri (1265–1321). Dante created a unique literary journey through the Christian afterlife in his Divine Comedy. Like a library itself, the epic poem is inscribed with immeasurably rich historical, philosophical and cultural knowledge. Above all, the Divine Comedy has characterized our collective perceptions of hell. Scenes like Dante’s encounter with the lovers Francesca and Paolo were often taken up in literature and art. Dante’s poem underwent an intensive reception during the period of Weimar Classicism and in the 19th century. This is reflected in an abundance of editions and translations, illustrations and paintings, theoretical studies and poetic emulations. There is no other location that this “Dante Renaissance” can be followed as well as at the Duchess Anna Amalia Library in Weimar. Marking the 750th anniversary of the poet’s birth year, the exhibition presents Dante’s multilayered afterlife through the medium of an open book. In addition to the astoundingly modern graphics of Joseph Anton Koch, Johann Heinrich Füssli and John Flaxman, translations ranging from August Wilhelm Schlegel to Philalethes, Karl Witte’s edition of the Commedia, and Goethe’s fascination with the poet, all testify to Dante’s unwavering popularity.
