Summary: An enthralling journey through the works of artists who have made art history north of the Alps and in the “land where the lemon trees bloom”, starting from Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Caspar Wolf, both of whom, at the threshold of modernity, embodied the north–south axis, and all the way to Lucio Fontana and Alberto Giacometti, who ended this period as pathbreakers. Between these two extremes familiar comparisons have been made, but more often than not others. are unprecedented and surprising: Arnold Böcklin and Giorgio de Chirico, Ferdinand Hodler and Adolfo Wildt, Albert Anker and Giorgio Morandi, Giovanni Segantini and Medardo Rosso, Félix Vallotton and Felice Casorati, Max Bill and Luigi Veronesi. This inquiry is accompanied by an in-depth analysis of several figures in a league of their own: Giacomo Balla, Fortunato Depero, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Paul Klee, whose works are the fruit of the encounter between sensibilities acquired in the north and the atmospheres gleaned from the Mediterranean. Thus, unfurling through over 150 artworks we discover interconnections of rhyme and dissonance, unexpected convergences and sudden divergences, all of which have characterized two centuries of Italian and Swiss art.
