Exhibition held at Scuderie del Quirinale, Roma (then to Kunstforum, Vienna, in 2016). Italian text. Summary: The Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome, the Kunstforum in Vienna and the Académie de France / Villa Medici present the first major retrospective of Balthus's work held in Italy since the exhibition some fifteen years ago. This exhibition, which will include not only a selection of drawings and photographs but over eighty paintings from major museums and private collections, sets out to explore various aspects of Balthus's artistic career in an effort to shed new light on the singular output of this great 20th century artist. Balthus's rapport with Italy was an ongoing love affair. Fascinated in his youth by the work of the Early Renaissance masters, particularly Piero della Francesca and Mantegna, in conceiving his paintings of figures and landscapes Balthus plumbed the depths of a pondered, logical clarity which he inherited from the Italy exalted in the poetry of Rilke or in the work of art historian Meier-Graefe. Balthus's love affair with Italian art began in 1961, in the course of a lengthy sojourn in Rome as director of the Villa Medici. He used the time to study drawing and fresco techniques in great depth, developing projects for the restoration of the villa and gardens, adopting an original and sometimes ambiguous approach to the relationship between the past and the present. The exhibition will be showcasing Balthus's work in chronological order, accompanied by parallels highlighting the influence of such literary models as Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights and Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, underscoring the importance of his friendship with Artaud, Derain and Giacometti, and illustrating the method he typically adopted when painting, his idiosyncratic way of using models, drawing, photography and the environment of his workshops.
