Summary: The important but relatively little known collection of European art at the San Diego Museum of Art includes paintings by Giotto, Fra Angelico, Giorgione, Veronese, El Greco, Sanchez Cotan, Zurbaran, Vouet, Goya, Ingres, and other major artists. For the first time, these works receive the attention they merit ; the present book provides the first details scholarly catalogue of the Italian, Spanish and French paintings before 1850 in the museum. In addition to comprehensive entries on these works, including full accounts of their provenance, condition, and previous bibliography, the volume contains an introductory chapter on the formation of the collection, an essay that makes a significant contribution to the history of collecting Old Master paintings in the western United States. An appendix includes entires on a small sample of the European sculpture at the museum.
