Summary: Late sixteenth-century Venice saw the creation of some of the most inventive picture frames ever devised – carved and embellished with bold scrolls, grotesque masks and lascivious figures. Named after the sculptor and architect Jacopo Sansovino, these range from the flamboyant and intricate to the quiet, subtle and simple. In this book, which accompanies an exhibition of Sansovino frames at the National Gallery, the authors discuss more than thirty examples, the materials and techniques employed, and their relationship to drawings, prints and the contemporary décor, furniture, wooden ceilings and stucco vaults of sixteenth-century Venice.
