Item Number: 137678 Title: Mit durchaus zeitgemässem Charakter : ADOLF DIETRICH in seiner Zeit und darüber hinaus. Of Absolutely Modern Character : Adolf Dietrich in His Time and Beyond Author: Herlach, Katja ; Dorothee Messmer (eds) Price: Not Available ISBN: 9783858814678 Description: Zürich: Scheidegger & Spiess, 2015. 28cm., pbk., 208pp., 263 color illus. German-English text. Exhibition held at Kunstmuseum, Olten. Summary: Adolf Dietrich (1877–1957) has gained much recognition internationally already in his lifetime as an artist between naive and new objectivity styles, yet he remained an outsider in the art world. Born as the youngest of a farmer family’s seven children on the Swiss shore of the Lake of Constance and entirely self-taught as a painter, he made a remarkable career to become a celebrated artist, termed the “German Rousseau” by some, who could live of his income from selling his works. Dietrich’s oeuvre has always been received together with those of other representatives of new objectivity, magic realism, and naive art. Yet never since his passing in 1957 his works have been shown together with those of his important contemporaries. The Kunstmuseum Olten now for the first time in nearly sixty years has staged a comprehensive retrospective in which Dietrich’s pictures are accompanied by paintings of artist such as Cuno Amiet, Otto Dix, Giovanni Giacometti, Ferdinand Hodler, Henri Rousseau, or Félix Vallotton. The coinciding new monograph is richly illustrated in color throughout, featuring some 160 works by Dietrich and other artists. The essays contextualize his art and highlight Dietrich’s lasting significance. We regret to inform you that this title is no longer available. P.O.
