Summary: Volume II of this five-volume series, which explores the architectural and functional history of the Hofburg in Vienna, analyzes the courts development into a central European imperial residence, beginning with the reign of Ferdinand I and concluding with the reign of Leopold I. This new publication about the multi-faceted history of this continually-expanding residence is accompanied by investigations into how members of the Habsburg dynasty practiced of self-representation by examining the architecture of the Hofburg and its decorative forms, the close connection between ceremonial and spatial structures, as well as the architectural and functional importance of theaters, garden complexes, and art collections.
