Summary: Starting out from a study of the names and dedications of the most ancient churches in Ticino to various guardian and patron saints, as well as the most popular saint cults, the exhibition will include about a hundred works of all types, ranging from the twelfth to the eighteenth century. There will be wooden statues, reliefs, winged altarpieces, canvases, choir-books and ancient martyrologies, chalices, crosses, monstrances and reliquaries, and a related selection of reproductions of late medieval frescoes. Particular attention will be given to the giant frescoes of St Christopher, which have been the subject of extensive research throughout our area, to the luminous altarpieces of German origin in Ticino (thanks in part to a loan from the Landesmuseum in Zurich), illustrating their unusual iconography, and to the patron saints of the plague and other saints invoked to ward off evil.
