Summary: The Master of Bellaert is arguably the most significant of the Early Netherlandish woodcut designers. The artist worked, almost exclusively, for the Haarlem based printing house of Jacob Bellaert which was in operation from 1483 to 1486. The book touches on such long standing issues as the artist’s identity and origin. As it is, the attributive name Master of Bellaert, first coined by Martin Conway in 1884, actually covers two distinct artistic personalities, one of which may be identified as the Master of the Tiburtine Sibyl, while the other artist, who is here identified as the artist that painted the highly important dynastic portrait series of the Counts of Holland in Haarlem Town Hall, stems from the orbit of the Flemish illuminator Loyset Liedet.
