Description: Zaragoza: Institución Fernando el Católico, 2012. 24cm., pbk., 683pp. illus., plus CD-Rom. Title: Guerre aux Demolisseurs! VICTOR HUGO et la défense du patrimoine
Author: Surlapierre, Nicolas
Price: $42.50
ISBN: 9782906610286
Record created on 06/28/18
Description: Milan: Silvana, 2018. 24cm., pbk., 192pp., 250 illus.

Price: $13.90    Original Price: $69.50
ISBN: 9788875763565
Record created on 01/03/14
Description: Siena: Betti, 2013. 25cm., pbk., 226pp. illus.

Description: Firenze: Giunti, 2011. 26cm., pbk., 288pp. illus., most in color. English text. Exhibition held at Palazzo Strozzi, Firenze.

Summary: Masterpieces by Botticelli, Beato Angelico, Piero del Pollaiolo, the Della Robbia family, and Lorenzo di Credi - the cream of Renaissance artists - show how the modern banking system developed in parallel alongside the most important artistic flowering in the history of the Western world. The exhibition also explores the links between that unique interweave of high finance, economy and art, and the religious and political upheavals of the time. ''Money and Beauty. Bankers, Botticelli and the Bonfire of the Vanities'' recounts the birth of our modern banking system and of the economic boom that it triggered, providing a reconstruction of European life and the continent's economy from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Visitors can delve into the daily life of the families that controlled the banking system and perceive the ongoing clash between spiritual and economic values that was such a feature of it. The saga of the art patrons is closely linked to that of the bankers who financed the ventures of princes and nobles alike, and indeed it was that very convergence that provided the humus in which some of the leading artists of all time were able to flourish. The exhibition takes the visitor on a journey to the roots of Florentine power in Europe, but it also explores the economic mechanisms which allowed the Florentines to dominate the world of trade and business 500 years before modern communication methods were invented, and in so doing, to finance the Renaissance.

Description: Milano: Silvana, 2010. 27cm., pbk., 159pp., 40 color plates. French text. Exhibition held at Médiathèque d’Albi. Contents: A Reluctant Tolerance? ; Word over Image ; Painting and Religious Toleration in the Golden Age ; Toleration and Accommodation in the Netherlands Today. From the introduction: The image of the Netherlands as a tolerant nation originated in the early years of the Dutch Republic. Foreigners who visited the country at the beginning of the seventeenth century expressed their surprise at the religious diversity of society and the nonchalance with which people with divergent views were accepted. The French immigrant Jean- François LePetit wrote about Amsterdam, as early as 1616, that the Dutch 'receive and welcome people from diverse nations, who may freely reside there, without any religious scrutiny: French, German, English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Scottish, Danish ... indeed, there are even Turks and Jews.' It is an image that corresponds closely to the self-image that the Dutch have built up over the centuries. But is it true? Is tolerance an innate characteristic of the Dutch, or was it created in response to certain historical conditions? Does the religious toleration that existed in the seventeenth century correspond to the definition of tolerance that we use today? This book deals with these and many other questions relating to religious tolerance and intolerance in the Netherlands of the Golden Age, and will naturally also look at the relevance of this history to the present-day world.

Summary: The Portuguese Synagoge, or Snoge, was the largest Sephardi synagogue in the world when it was built, between 1671 and 1675. The fact that Amsterdam's Sephardim were permitted to erect this grand structure attests to the relative freedom of Jews in this part of Western Europe, at a time when Jews elsewhere were confined to ghettos and subject to restrictions. Through the centuries, foreign tourist have been amazed by the beauty and scale of the complex. The present volume examines many aspects of this glorious synagogue, which has been preserverd almost perfectly in its seventeenth-century state.
